Sister Lorene Schuster, SNJM

Sister Lorene Schuster, SNJM (Sister M. Michael Lawrence), passed away on August 1, 2023, at Mary’s Woods at Marylhurst in Lake Oswego, Ontario. She was 87. 

Sister was born in Spokane on September 11, 1935 to Loren and Margaret Schuster. She and her family were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and she attended the grade school there. She later graduated from Holy Names Academy. She entered the novitiate with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary on July 27, 1953, in Marylhurst, Oregon. She took on the religious name Sister M. Michael Lawrence in 1954 and professed perpetual vows with the order on August 5, 1960. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Marlyhurst.

Over her tenure in religious life, Sister served in classrooms, parishes and health care. She taught at various schools ran by the order in the Northwest. She served in the infirmary at Spokane's Convent of the Holy Names. She later attended St. Mary of the Lake University in Mundelein, Illinois and then served as a pastoral assistant in various parishes in Michigan. She was a religious sister for 67 years. 

Sister Lorene is preceded in death by her parents, Loren and Margaret Schuster, and her brother Deacon K. Don Schuster. She is survived by her sister-in-law Marlene Schuster, her nephew Paul Schuster, nieces Donna Prather (Eddie) and Helen Tugan (Adam), and their families. Sister Lorene is survived by her religious community, the Sisters and Associates of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. 

Mass of Resurrection will be held Friday, August 25, 2023, at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Rd., Spokane, at 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon reception following. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N Wall St, Spokane, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sisters' Memorial.
